Cabo Roig and the southern Costa Blanca

Blue Flag beaches, coastal walks along the Mediterranean and around 320 days of sunshine a year.

Cabo Roig

The gem of the southern Costa Blanca

Many consider Cabo Roig the gem of the southern Costa Blanca, known for its sandy beaches, beautiful villas and scenic coastal paths along the Mediterranean – with views all the way to Torrevieja in the north and La Manga in the south. The beaches of Cala Caleta and Cala Capitán hold the Blue Flag award for environment, services and safety – and not least their beauty.

There are excellent restaurants both down by the sea and along the main N-332 road. The old harbour is well worth a visit. Sailing is the big sport here, but other water sports are on offer during the summer months too. Overlooking it all is the old watchtower, Torre Vigía de Cabo Roig.

The Costa Blanca enjoys around 320 days of sunshine a year and an average annual temperature of about 18 °C – perfect for swimming, sailing, golf and walking, even in winter.

Markets

Markets all year round

Weekly markets are a long-standing Spanish tradition. You will find fruit and vegetables, cured meats, fresh bread, rotisserie chicken, flowers, clothes and much more – usually cheaper than in the shops, and a little haggling is often welcome. Day trips

Worth a day out

Torrevieja

A coastal town of just over 100,000 people, about 10 km to the north. Beaches and sunshine, but also lively nightlife with bars, restaurants and terraces. Thanks to its location, Torrevieja stays warm and pleasant through the winter months too.

Alicante

The provincial capital and port city. The old town, Barrio de Santa Cruz, has narrow lanes and colourful houses. From here, take the lift or a steep walk up to the medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara, with stunning views over the Mediterranean.

Santa Pola

A coastal town with beautiful beaches, a busy fishing port and a history going back to Roman times. Its 16th-century fortress, the Castillo-Fortaleza, is now a cultural centre and museum. In the Salinas de Santa Pola nature reserve you can see flamingos and many other birds.

Villajoyosa

A charming seaside town, known for the colourful houses along its seafront and its chocolate-making tradition – do visit the Museo del Chocolate. Every July the town celebrates Moros y Cristianos with spectacular parades.

Mar Menor

Just to the south, the Costa Cálida begins with the Mar Menor, one of Europe’s largest saltwater lagoons. Its water is warm and salty, and the lagoon is famous for its mud baths.
